Raising Grandchildren

http://marriage.about.com/cs/grandparenting/a/raisinggrandkid.htmIn a previous blog I wrote about how children are coming back home. We are not only facing boomerang children we are also facing having to raise our grandchildren. The number of children living with their grandparents is increased by 50% according to marriage .about .com. I know of several married couples over 50 that are raising their grandchildren. I say more power to you. I hoping I am not faced with that challenge. I would rather keep them for one day love them and send them back home.

Downsizing Your Home

After the kids leave home you might find the hose is to big before you down size here is a list that I made hope it will give you something to think about

Pros

1. More time. Smaller house less rooms to clean.

2. Lower Utility bills

3. Cheaper house payments

4. Most of the time you get a newer house and if you had a two story a one level house saves time and it is nice not having to climb steps.

Cons

1. Not enough space you may feel cramped.

2. No guest room

3. Emotional changes some people do not handle change very well.

4. If you like your old neighborhood you will miss your neighbors.

If you are thinking about downsizing make your own list and don’t jump into something without some serious thought.

Saving for Retriement

People who are over 50 should already be saving for retirement or seriously thinking about retirement. My 401k has taken some major hit in the past. It is doing a lot better this year. My goal is to retire at 60 or sooner. I hope I graduate from Midlands Tech. before I retire. I have been saving for around 25 years I am hoping all pays off and when I retire I don't end up getting a job at Wal-Mart or McDonalds. When I retire I would love to travel. That is what I am saving for.

Keeping up with technology after 50

I am sure lots of people after 50 are very technical savvy on computers. I am not one of them. I have only purchased three lap tops in my life time and two of them were purchased Saturday. After  my destroying my husband's desk top computer I was in desperate need of a computer. My laptop was not working so I decide to purchase a new one. I went to the store and saw this cute red one. It was small and light. After making my purchase I did not have any problem and I was up and running. The problem started when I wanted to insert a CD that I just purchase and realized that the computer did not have a place to insert my CD. I finally realize my cut little red computer did not have what I needed. So I took it back to the store and purchase a bigger and not so cute computer. I guess looks are not everything when it comes to buying a computer

Running a Race After 50

Running a Race After 50

After attending the ½ Marathon/5K I found myself motivated to run. After riding around for 30 minutes in my car, I finally mapped out my 5k route. I ran the 5k in 44minuites today. My goal for next year’s races it to run the 5k in 30 minutes. I know at my age I have my work cut out for me to accomplish that goal. I just have to focus to stay healthy and keep running.

Life after 50 and dealing with Chips on Race Day

Today was the Palmetto Half Marathon /5k event. This is the first time that I have received a chip to place in my shoe. Of course back in my days a chip was something you ate and you could not just eat one or some cute guys on motorcycles. This chip you put on your shoelace. I was glad there was someone who knew how this thing worked. This nice gentleman was placing the chip on his wife’s shoe and I asked him the question on how this thing works and he offered to place the chip on my shoe for me. He was my hero. The chip was neat when you finished the race they called out your name and congratulated you for finishing the race. It was great hearing “Vickie Vaught from Blythewood congratulations you finished the race. “

Technology after 50

Technology has change so much since I was a teenager. I grew up on a typewriter and walkman head sets. We did not have any cell phone texting ; IPODS or remotes for the TV. Every time I figure out how to use something they come out with something new. The best thing about technology is having a son who know how to use all of the stuff. keep trying new stuff that is what keeps us young.

Missing MOM

For me the worse thing about being 50 over is your parents are aging and you realize even more that parents don't live forever. You are face with reverse roles. You have to be the parent. My mother died of breast cancer two years ago and it was so hard to see her suffer. She was always such a strong lady who raise three children on her own. I remember trying to play the parent role and taking my mom to the doctor and holding her hand when the nurse had to stick her with a needle; just like she use to do for me when I was a child. My sister and I use to take turns taking care of her. I would drive to Virginia and pick her up at my sister house and I would take mom to her house so she could spend a few days their. I will always remember my mom as being strong and brave women. She is the person who taught me you are never to old to start some thing new.
